The term area studies has been the subject of debate and some researchers specialised in the Middle East or certain regions of Asia do not consider their field of research to be part of area studies.
However, given that academic collaboration and bridges between independent disciplines are considered essential elements for correctly understanding a region in its entirety and its specific features, there is growing interest in this approach. Moreover, it is widely recognised that area studies allows us to question the results of dominant western academic perspectives and that the nature of area studies influences both practice and research results.
